Crawford Market now known as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai is one of the biggest and very popular market place in South Mumbai. The market got its name from Arthur Crawford, who was the first Municipal Commissioner of Bombay.

Later on the name of the market was changed and was kept on Mahatma Jotirao Phule. The market is just opposite to the headquarters of Mumbai Police. The market is famous for wholesale sale of fruit and vegetable and poultry items. One can also find lots of pet store at one end of the MarketThe shop keepers inside in there sell imported goods like cosmetics, gift items etc. Crawford Market was the main wholesale market for fruits in til March 1996, now it is relocated to Navi Mumbai.
The building of this market was built in 1869, and was donated by Cowasji Jehangir. After Indiawas independent, it was renamed to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was a Maharashtrian social reformer. This was the first building inIndia which was lit up by electricity.
