Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport – International Commercial face of India

Numbers of factors have played huge role in making Mumbai city a one of the commercial and metro cities of India, in that Mumbai’s airport have given big contribution. I am saying this because good transportation would be first requirement for city’s progress. When we talk about Mumbai’s transportation then this city’s transportation is very well developed. All transportation sources such as road, rail, and air. The growth of Mumbai city got speed because of well –planned and structured airport. Airport has become prime international commercial medium.

 Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is old but well-progressed airport of Mumbai. Previously it was known as Sahar International Airport. It is chief airport of India and Mumbai and it is 2nd fullest airport in South Asia in the sense of passenger traffic. After knowing this static numbers, you must have understood how much importance this airport contains.

This airport has 5 operating system that are located over almost 1,450 acres operational area. It is south Asia and India’s biggest and most precious aviation hub. More than 29.1 million travellers utilize this huge airport and during 2010-2011 almost 670,235 tonnes of consignment was earned. India’s one more international airport that is located at Delhi called as Indira Gandhi International Airport it also captures huge air traffic from South Asia that is more than half. While 2010 April –November, this airport became a busiest airport in sense of international traffic and in overall passenger traffic it had become 2nd busiest airport.

As I said earlier, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport was popular as Sahar International Airport and Santa Cruz Airport but during 17th century when Maratha emperor was ruling over Maharashtra state, at that time these two airports were merged and it was renamed. While 2006 February, Mumbai International Airport Limited that is group of GVK Industries Ltd, had appointed Bidvest and Airports Company South Africa for the modernisation of this airport.

 

This airport contains two prime terminals such as Terminal 1 for national flights and for international flights there is Terminal 2. Both terminals utilize similar airside amenities but on landside they are separate, to drive between these terminals you just require 15-20 minutes. Airport’s operating agency handles coach shuttle services within International and domestic terminals just for transportation passengers. There is some more separation in Terminal 1, it is divided in Terminal 1-A, this was opened in 1992. It gives Air India’s divisions Air India Regional and Indian Airlines and also Kingfisher whereas Terminal 1 B is unique Santa Cruz building that is utilized just for domestic and international operations.

Indian Government is planning for further expansion of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, so that people would more attract towards India for business, tourism and many more purposes. After this expansion, this airport would definitely become as tremendous and classic as any other developed country’s airport. Therefore, in case still not explored this airport then immediately take a flight for Mumbai and take a view of international face of India.
